Live updates on the 2024 US election: Trump protests in Pennsylvania while Harris and Walz take a bus tour of the state ahead of the DNC

Harris promises to pass the first nationwide ban on food price gouging

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are on the campaign trail this weekend, with both candidates holding events in Pennsylvania.

On Saturday, Trump held a rally in Wilkes-Barre where he launched familiar attacks against Harris, Democrats, New York prosecutors and the media. The former president spent most of his time repeating his familiar remarks about inflation, the border, the stock market and more.

Meanwhile, the Harris-Walz team will take a bus tour of Pennsylvania on Sunday, just one day before the Democratic National Convention.

Harris will start in Pittsburgh with her husband Doug Emoff, her running mate Governor Tim Walz and his wife Gwen Walz, and will make several stops in Allegheny and Beaver counties throughout the day.

They are expected to discuss the Biden-Harris administration's record and strengthening unions in the swing state before heading to the convention in Milwaukee.

Trump says Jews who vote for Democrats “should have their heads examined”

The former president addressed comments about Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and the Jewish population at his rally on Saturday, claiming that any Jew who votes for a Democrat “should have a brain scan.”

Trump claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris did not choose Shapiro as her running mate “because he is Jewish.” Shapiro was reportedly a Democratic candidate. He has been criticized by pro-Palestinian activists who do not approve of U.S. support for Israel's war in Gaza.

At the same time, Trump said: “I don’t think [Shapiro] is a good person.”

The former president said Jews who vote for Democrats “should have their heads examined.”

Trump attacks Harris at rally

Donald Trump spent most of his rally on Saturday attacking Vice President Kamala Harris and repeating familiar, unproven claims to his supporters.

The former president claimed that Harris would plunge the United States into “World War III” and cause a Great Depression-like economic collapse – two well-known statements that, however, have no evidence to support their veracity.

Trump criticized Harris, calling her a “crazy person” and “lunatic” for her laughter, saying President Joe Biden “hates” her and complaining that she had not been interviewed in several weeks.

At one point during his campaign, Trump asked rally attendees to turn to the television screens on which his campaign team was showing a negative video about Harris.

Trump says Joe Biden “hates” Kamala Harris

During his campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Donald Trump claimed that President Joe Biden “hates” Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Joe Biden hates her,” Trump said of Harris. “Joe Biden hates her. That was the downfall of a president. They went out and I spent a hundred million dollars fighting Joe Biden. They told him he couldn't win, they said his debate performance wasn't the best ever, they said mine was the best ever.”

Trump's speech at the rally was marked by familiar rhetoric that he has repeated at his press conferences, rallies and speeches.

There is no evidence that Biden hates Harris.

Hundreds of people attend Walz's rally in Nebraska

Hundreds of people gathered at the Astro Theater near Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday to show their support for vice presidential candidate Governor Tim Walz.

After an introduction by his wife and a former high school student, Walz took the podium, where he promoted the policies of Vice President Kamala Harris and criticized those of Donald Trump.

Walz highlighted his experience as a high school teacher and football coach, his wife's experience as a teacher and his family's legacy as educators.

“I truly believe that each and every one of us can make a difference,” Walz said.

The crowd of energetic protesters chanted “We are not going back,” “Coach,” and “Thank you, Tim.”

DNC puts up anti-Trump posters near rally site in Pennsylvania

The Democratic National Committee has strategically placed anti-Donald Trump posters in the area around Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where the former president is holding a rally today.

“Donald Trump has always been a bad bet – and working families know better than to bet on Trump and his extreme 'Project 2025' agenda,” DNC spokesman Andy Toevs said in a statement.

“Before he travels to the Keystone State, Pennsylvanians know the choice in this election is clear: In November, voters will choose between a prosecutor with a proven track record and a nutcase with 34 felony convictions and a dangerous, extreme agenda that would take away our basic freedoms.”

The billboards, which are located in Scranton, Dunmore, Shavertown, Luzerne and Mountain Top, feature a photo of Trump with the words “Don't bet on Trump.”

Around the former president's face are words describing Trump, such as “convicted felon,” “sore loser,” and “he cheats.”

Harris is adopting a populist tone on economic issues. Will this help with young voters?

Vice President Kamala Harris struck a decidedly populist tone when she unveiled her economic policy in Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday.

The vice president has made housing a core theme of her policy, promising to build three million new homes. As part of that, she has proposed tax incentives for building entry-level homes. This comes at a time when nearly one in ten homes is now worth more than $1 million, which is a record high.

The rollout of her policy comes just as Harris is about to head to Chicago for the Democratic National Convention, with the focus on whether she will face a revolt from younger voters because she and President Joe Biden support Israel in the war with Hamas that has left thousands dead in Gaza. Indeed, Harris has confronted protesters at some of her first rallies, with varying degrees of success.

However, polls have shown that young voters are more likely to prioritize the economy, particularly the cost of living and housing, while far fewer consider the war in Gaza to be of similar importance. The Independent During the Republican National Convention before Biden's resignation, black voters interviewed in Milwaukee cited inflation and “very high” rents as the main reasons for their dissatisfaction with the Democrats.
