2 dead and 2 injured in shooting in East Oakland after verbal altercation on 83rd Avenue, police say

OAKLAND, California – Two people were killed and two others seriously injured in a shooting in the Webster neighborhood of East Oakland on Saturday morning, police said.

Officers responded to the incident in the 1600 block of 83rd Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. after the city's ShotSpotter gunshot detection system was activated, police said.

Several people were involved in a “verbal altercation” when someone fired multiple shots at a group, hitting the victims, police said. The shooter fled in a vehicle.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, two others were taken to nearby hospitals where their condition is critical, police said.

The names of the dead were withheld until their next of kin were notified, police said.
