Two officers responded to a home on Foggy Creek Lane shortly before 6:15 p.m. Saturday, where they were immediately met with gunfire when they opened the doors of their patrol cars, the sheriff's office said. Additional officers arrived at the scene a short time later and were also met with gunfire from the home.

Cunningham was shot during the incident and taken to a local hospital where he eventually died.

“It appears our officers were ambushed,” Paulding County Sheriff's Major Ashley Henson told reporters.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, investigators learned that a woman had left the house and returned before being found with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition.

A SWAT team later entered the house and found the shooter dead, apparently from a gunshot wound.
