IMA doctors on strike across the country News Live Updates: SC takes cognizance of Kolkata rape and murder case: What could be the impact?

According to ANI, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started psychological tests of the main accused in the rape and murder case of a doctor-student in Kolkata.

A psychologist from the CBI team arrived in Kolkata on Saturday to assist the investigation team. The rape and murder of the aspiring doctor have sparked nationwide outrage and elicited reactions from various sectors.

West Bengal Congress workers held a rally against the incident, while members of the LGBTQIA+ community staged a protest on Saturday demanding justice for the victim.

Resident doctors and medical students staged protest rallies outside Mangalagiri AIIMS Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College in Delhi. West Bengal Congress workers also gathered against the incident, while ABVP workers protested against the TMC government in West Bengal.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) national president Asokan on Saturday said the time was ripe for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, adding that they would write to the Prime Minister.

On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people, including several private citizens, entered the RG Kar Hospital, attacked protesting doctors and medical students and attempted to loot the premises, forcing security officials to disperse the crowd.

On August 16, Kolkata police said they had arrested 19 people suspected of involvement in the mob violence on the hospital premises.

On August 9, a junior doctor was found dead in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, sparking nationwide protests by doctors and healthcare professionals.
