Together for justice: Fans from East Bengal and Mohun Bagan protest against the tragic death of a doctor

Supporters of arch-rivals East Bengal and Mohun Bagan gathered near the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday evening to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College. In an unexpected show of solidarity, both fan groups and supporters of Mohammedan SC joined forces in their call for justice.

Over a hundred protesters initially gathered with placards outside the stadium during the scheduled Durand Cup match, which was cancelled due to security concerns. The protests escalated when actor Usashi Chakraborty and theatre star Sourav Palodhi joined them. The police eventually deployed a larger police force to bring the situation under control, resulting in several arrests.

AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey criticised the state government for the breakdown of law and order. The main thoroughfare connecting the north and south of the city was heavily blocked, affecting traffic. Amid rising tensions, police imposed prohibitory orders and arrested several protesters, leading to ongoing confrontations as more supporters arrived.
