NFL: Louis Rees-Zammit defies back injury and makes his home debut for the Kansas City Chiefs in the preseason | NFL News

Louis Rees-Zammit ignored concerns about a back injury and played his first home game for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The former Gloucester and Wales winger was in doubt for the team's pre-season game against the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead Stadium after missing training during the week.

However, in his second appearance for the Super Bowl winners, which the Lions won 24-23 thanks to a last-minute field goal, he played in various roles.

The 23-year-old, who is listed as a running back on the Chiefs' website, took a kickoff, returned a Lions kickoff 27 yards and was used on the punt return team and as a wide receiver.

After his first appearance at Arrowhead, Rees-Zammit told KSNT News: “I was able to experience [the atmosphere] a little bit today. I'm looking forward to another game here next week and then we'll see what happens.

“I do my best. I train hard every day to show what I can do.

“The more reps I do, the better I get. So I'm excited to see what happens next week and of course in the future.”

The Chiefs' final preseason game will be next week against the Chicago Bears, after which their roster will be announced.

Rees-Zammit gave up rugby union in January to pursue a career in American football, signing a three-year contract with the Chiefs.

He is aiming for a spot on the Chiefs' 53-man roster for the NFL season, which begins on September 6 with a game against the Baltimore Ravens.
