Despite injury problems, the Browns let QB Deshaun Watson play in the last preseason game

Deshaun Watson's preseason debut remains on schedule. It is not yet known who will block the Cleveland Browns quarterback.

Three more offensive tackles were injured in Cleveland's exhibition game loss to Minnesota on Saturday, further weakening the important position while the Browns await the return of starters Jedrick Wills Jr. and Jack Conklin, whose season-ending injuries would have been a problem.

Watson is scheduled to play in Seattle's final exhibition game against Cleveland this week, his first game since breaking his right shoulder in November.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said the series of injuries at tackle has not changed that goal so far.

“The plan is for him to play,” Stefanski said on a Zoom call Sunday. “I'm always taking in information, so I'll make sure I talk to him this week and work through that. I won't get into who's playing and how much yet, but I'll definitely work through that in the next few days.”

Watson was unable to play in Cleveland's first two preseason games as the team closely monitors his progress after the 28-year-old underwent surgery to repair the fractured socket in his throwing shoulder.

Watson, who has played in just 12 games in two seasons with the Browns, has pitched on all but one day of training camp, and was a full participant in two joint practices last week against the Vikings.

Stefanski declined to specify how often Watson or Cleveland's starters will play against the Seahawks. The Browns open the regular season on Sept. 8 against Dallas.

“Everything is on the table,” he said. “We just have to keep … we have a plan, look at it, see what's available, do we want to change anything? We'll work through that in the next few days.”

Stefanski said Wills will not return to practice this week. He has been working on the sidelines with Cleveland's training staff and appears to be ahead of Conklin, who was injured in last season's opener.

In Saturday's 27-12 loss to the Vikings, James Hudson III, who mainly came on as a substitute for Wills, was sidelined with an ankle injury, and substitutes Germain Ifedi (hand) and Hakeem Adeniji (knee) also sustained injuries.

The Browns signed Ifedi and Adeniji in the offseason to add depth after Wills, Conklin and rookie Dawand Jones suffered season-ending knee injuries in 2023. Jones is healthy but was rested against Minnesota.

Stefanski said Hudson will not play this week but will “be back soon.” He added that Ifedi “should be back to full health” but Adeniji, who was injured trying to help with a tackle after an interception return, will be “out for a while.”

While there doesn't appear to be an immediate need to find a tackle, Browns general manager Andrew Berry is undoubtedly looking on the waivers list for potential reinforcements.

“Nobody's happy about the injury concerns,” Stefanski said. “But when it happens, we have to do our due diligence and look around and stuff. But I certainly have confidence in the group we have.”
