Coronation Street confirms tragic details of Toyah Battersby baby story after fan complaints

Coronation Street spoilers have confirmed a controversial new storyline for Toyah Battersby, which fans have already objected to. It was revealed that Toyah, played by Georgia Taylor, gave birth to a stillborn baby girl at 19.

In the harrowing scenes, viewers learn that Toyah Battersby buried her stillborn baby in a park after being raped 23 years ago. And so Toyah fears the worst when she learns the land is about to be dug up and her secret is about to be discovered.

Long-time viewers of the ITV soap may know that in 2001, Toyah went out with Sam Kingston, played by Scott Wright, and was walking home alone, but was attacked and raped by an unknown man. She was found by Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas, who helped her get back home.

Toyah later gave a statement to police and was examined in hospital, with several male residents being arrested as suspects. She struggled with the aftermath of her ordeal and developed agoraphobia as a result. When her boyfriend Phil Simmonds, played by Jack Deam, later consoled her, she recognised his voice and came to the horrifying realisation that he was the one who had raped her.

When he found out she knew, Phil stopped her from leaving, but Toyah was saved by Peter Barlow, who heard her screams and knocked Phil unconscious. Phil was later found guilty of rape and sent to prison, while Toyah left Weatherfield after reuniting with Spider Nugent, and the couple moved to London.

Next week, Corrie spoilers have revealed that Leanne Battersby will tell Rowan about Toyah's negative attitude towards the Institute via FaceTime, and Rowan urges her to distance herself from her sister immediately. When Toyah goes to the park to look for Roy's dog Freddie, she comes across three investigators digging up a rose bed. They reveal that they saw Freddie digging in the same spot, so they suspect Roy may have buried Lauren's body there.

When Toyah hears this, she sees red, takes a shovel and smashes the window of her car while one of the investigators films her with his cell phone. Nick Tilsely soon arrives and convinces Toyah to put the shovel down as she bursts into tears. After returning home, Toyah berates an angry Sam Blakeman for losing Freddie in the first place.

Shortly afterwards, the police call Victoria Court looking for Toyah. Toyah goes to the flower shop and buys a single yellow rose. When lawyer Joel Deering asks who it is for, Toyah says it is for Leanne.

Later, Nick desperately tries to keep the peace between Leanne and Toyah. When Joel asks Leanne if she liked the rose Toyah bought her, Leanne is confused and asks Toyah about it, who claims she threw it away. Toyah remains adamant that she did the right thing in defending Roy's reputation and stopping investigators from desecrating such a special place, as Nick is confused by her choice of words.

When Nick gets home, he finds Toyah in tears as she tells him that she gave birth to a stillborn baby girl when she was 19, kept it a secret, and buried her in the exact spot in the park that investigators had dug up. Toyah takes a deep breath and confesses to Nick that the baby's father was Phil Simmonds, the guy who raped her.

Simon Barlow then returns home and, unaware of the suspense, tells Nick and Toyah that the police are digging up North Cross Park and Bobby thinks they have found a body.

The new storyline was teased last month and at the time, Corrie fans spoke out against the shocking twist. Former Corrie cast member Vicky Entwistle has criticised producers over a controversial storyline involving her on-screen daughter, as she played Toyah's mother Janice Battersby in the ITV soap from 1997 until her exit in 2011.
