Lexington Park woman faces multiple charges after incident at liquor store – Southern Maryland News Net

Shameka L. Harrod, 32, of Lexington Park

On August 10, 2024, Shameka L. Harrod, 32, of Lexington Park, was arrested after an incident at Canopy Liquors on Great Mills Road escalated into a confrontation with police. Harrod now faces several charges, including drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, destruction of evidence, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.

The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office reported that it was called to Canopy Liquors at approximately 7:51 a.m. for a disturbance call. Store personnel reported that a woman, later identified as Shameka Harrod, was inside the store and was causing a disturbance by allegedly yelling and acting erratically.

When officers arrived, they observed Harrod leaving the liquor store and walking away from the scene. They approached Harrod, who appeared to be very agitated and was showing signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Her erratic behavior prompted officers to sedate her, at which point Harrod dropped several personal items, including a lighter, clothing, and a broken piece of a glass smoking device.

While attempting to secure the crime scene and gather more information, officers noticed the broken glass smoking device that Harrod had dropped. Upon closer inspection, the device was found to contain a white powdery residue that officers identified as cocaine. Harrod, realizing that officers had discovered the device, intentionally stepped on it and broke it further, apparently in an attempt to destroy the evidence.

In addition to the glass smoking device, officers also found a black plastic bag nearby containing synthetic cannabinoids, commonly referred to as “K2.” During further searching, officers discovered even more drug paraphernalia, including a clear plastic bag containing a white rock-like substance that was later determined to be crack cocaine.

When officers attempted to arrest Harrod, she resisted by backing away and refusing to comply with their orders. The situation quickly escalated into a brief struggle as Harrod continued to resist being handcuffed. The commotion drew the attention of bystanders, further complicating the situation. After about a minute, officers managed to subdue Harrod and handcuff her.

A background check on Harrod revealed that she had two warrants out for her arrest from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office for failure to appear in court and probation violation, as well as a warrant out for her arrest from the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack for failure to appear.

After her arrest, Harrod was taken to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

She is currently facing several charges, including:

  • Possession of a controlled dangerous substance (not cannabis)
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Destruction of physical evidence
  • Improper conduct
  • Resisting arrest/hindering arrest
