Roadside aggression on Memorial Drive leads to gunshot wound and head injury

Two people were injured in a shooting incident near Kendall Square in Cambridge on Sunday, according to police and radio reports.

At 5:14 p.m., police received several calls about the incident at the corner of Ames Street and Memorial Drive in the MIT/Area II neighborhood between Kendall Square and the Charles River.

Although the city police's ShotSpotter technology did not appear to detect gunshots, officers arrived to find one person with a gunshot wound and another person with a head wound of unrelated origin. The head wound was caused by a blunt object – when two drivers got into an argument, one person hit the other and was shot for it, police said.

State police identified the drivers as Cesar Gutierrez, 65, of Revere, and Kevin Osorio, 30, of Boston. It is believed Gutierrez struck Osorio with a blunt object and Osorio responded by shooting Gutierrez multiple times with a licensed weapon. Both will be arraigned in Cambridge District Court after their medical release, police said.

Roads at Memorial Drive and Massachusetts Avenue were closed to through traffic as state and local police arrived to secure and investigate the scene. The two injured people were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston at 5:30 p.m., according to scan reports.

This is the ninth gun incident this year and the first since July 21, when gunshots were heard in Cambridgeport. Those injured in this incident are the fourth and fifth this year. No deaths have been reported.
