Lawyers met with a judge to discuss the status of an appeal of a murder conviction from more than a decade ago.

Michael Shoun of Elkhart is currently serving a life sentence without parole after being charged with the stabbing murder of his 17-year-old girlfriend in 2013.

Shoun was dating Tiana Alter, who lived with Shoun's sister, and was staying in Alter's room as he was on the run from a detention center where he was serving a sentence for repeated traffic violations, The Goshen News reported.

Shoun and Alter are said to have used synthetic drugs in their past. During a party in November 2013, Shoun came out of the bedroom he shared with Alter covered in blood. Alter was found curled up in a bedroom carpet that was pulled up from the floor and surrounded by a pool of blood.

According to the documents, Shoun appeared paranoid and spoke of satellites, the devil and empires. An evidentiary hearing is scheduled for February 15.
