Rotary International condemns incident of rape and murder of doctor RG Kar amid nationwide outrage | Indiablooms

Rotary International District 3291 has condemned the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Calcutta Government Hospital. RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and called for zero tolerance for any form of abuse or violence against medical personnel.

The organization called for immediate, swift and decisive action against those responsible for the crime, which sparked massive protests across the country.

In the statement signed by Dr Krishnendu Gupta, the current District Governor (2024-2025), Dr Ramendu Homchaudhuri, the District Governor for 2025-2026, and Tapas Bhattacharya, the District Governor for 2026-2027, the organisation demanded a central law specifically addressing ‘violence against doctors’ and including provisions to ensure a safe workplace for healthcare providers.

The statement expressed solidarity with the doctors and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) during these difficult times.

“In addition, all members of RID 3291 are called upon to support the cause against violence against doctors,” the statement said.

The declaration calls for broader societal change to reduce conflict, violence and crime and to protect health professionals who are seen as protectors in times of need and illness.

The Supreme Court on Sunday took voluntary cognizance of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and announced that it would hear the case on August 20.

The incident sparked massive protests across India with people demanding justice for the victim.

In Calcutta, the epicenter of the protests, there were numerous demonstrations over the weekend.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra has decided to hear the case.
