Spanish Fork Canyon closed for several hours after semi-trailer accident and fuel leak

UTAH COUNTY – An accident between two semi-trailers caused a significant fuel spill in Spanish Fork Canyon and closed U.S. Highway 6 for several hours.

At about 5 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol said the two trucks collided on U.S. 6 about a mile west of Thistle. All lanes were blocked by the wreckage, and the UHP said about 6,000 gallons of fuel leaked from one of the trucks.

Photos from the scene show a Maverik tanker with large holes in its side. The other semi-trailer was lying on its side.

The highway remained closed in both directions until the accident scene and oil spill were cleaned up. Traffic on US-6 was diverted to US-89 at the Thistle intersection.

The closure was lifted around 11 p.m.

UHP officials said one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
