Drowning incident near Captain John's: 72-year-old man found dead

NEWBURG, Maryland. – On the night of August 18, 2024, emergency personnel were called to the scene of a possible drowning accident near Captain John's Crab House, 16215 Cobb Island Road.

The call came in around 9:11 p.m. and indicated that a 72-year-old man who had been seen fishing at the end of the pier about an hour earlier was missing. His hat was discovered floating in the water.

Police, fire and rescue teams arrived immediately and began a search in the Potomac River. However, due to adverse weather conditions, helicopter support could not be provided. Despite these difficulties, the teams found and recovered the victim within 30 minutes. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the incident.
