Police – NBC 6 South Florida

A Miami-Dade man has been arrested for killing his elderly father, who he said fell in the man's home, police said.

According to the report, it was just before 1 a.m. Saturday when Miami-Dade police and firefighters rushed to a home in the 9900 block of Northwest 6th Lane where an unconscious man lay.

David Buer, who had called police, met with the rescue team and led them to a bedroom where his father lay unconscious in bed, the report said.

The fire department confirmed the father's death at the scene of the accident. Authorities found that he had numerous bruises on his face, neck, upper body and arms, as well as minor cuts on both arms.

David Buer, who had been caring for his father alone for the past two years, said his father had suffered a serious fall a few days earlier, resulting in bruises and cuts, the report said.

The son added that the injuries to his father's arms were caused by being helped back into bed, the report said.

However, blood spatter was found on nearby blinds and blood smears were found on the father's bed. Several blood-soaked paper towels were found throughout the house, the report said.

The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy that determined Paul Buer's cause of death was “fatal force, including strangulation” and ruled the manner of death a homicide, the report said.

The extent of his injuries did not match David Buer's statements and the medical examiner stated that the injuries could not be attributed to a fall, the report said.

David Buer was taken into custody and questioned by detectives, but he “made a self-serving statement stating that the victim had fallen several days earlier and hit the walker,” the report said.

According to the report, David Buer was also found to have injuries on the outside of his forearms and hands.

David Buer was taken to jail and later appeared before a judge who ordered his detention without bail and assigned him a public defender.
