Beaufort mourns the death of former Mayor Richard Stanley

BEAUFORT, NC (WITN) – The city of Beaufort mourns the loss of Richard Stanley, who served as mayor from 2007 to 2017.

The city said Stanley spearheaded significant developments during his tenure, including the incorporation of Front Street Village, the expansion of city limits to include property in Beaufort East, a new wastewater treatment plant and the construction of the bridge connecting Beaufort and Morehead City, among many other accomplishments.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Mayor Richard Lynn Stanley, who dedicated 10 years to leading Beaufort with an unwavering commitment to our community,” said Mayor Sharon Harker. “His leadership was marked by grace and dignity, and he skillfully guided our city through challenges and successes. Mayor Stanley's love for Beaufort was evident in every decision he made, and our city always came first. While he will be greatly missed, we will never forget his profound impact on our community.”

After the end of his term in 2017, Governor Roy Cooper awarded Stanley the Order of the Long Pine Leaf, which is given to individuals who have made a proven outstanding service to the state.

According to the city, prior to serving as mayor, Stanley served as an assistant district attorney in Wilmington, opened his law firm and worked as city attorney for Emerald Isle and other municipalities and counties in North Carolina.
