Chase catches fire; Mishawaka police report three incidents overnight

MISHAWAKA — Mishawaka police responded to three crimes within 5.5 hours. Of the three suspects involved, one was arrested, one fled and a female suspect was hospitalized. Police have no current information on her condition.

Shooting victim with non-life-threatening injuries

At 1 a.m. on Aug. 19, officers were dispatched to 501 E. 18th St. for a report of a shooting. Officers found a 35-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the abdomen, police said in a news release. Police said a suspect was identified, but that person fled the scene before officers arrived. They believe the shooting was an isolated incident.

Fire during chase

On Aug. 18 at about 11:15 p.m., officers initiated a traffic stop because the license plate did not match the vehicle, police reported. The pursuit, which began near the intersection of Grape Road and White Oak Drive, ended when the driver left the road and struck a tree on Day Road, east of the Canadian National Railroad tracks, police said.

Officers found the driver unconscious. She was removed from the vehicle when it caught fire, police said, and the fire was extinguished by an Indiana State Trooper who was on scene with officers. Officers performed CPR on the driver until paramedics arrived and she was taken to the hospital, police said. This incident is currently under investigation by St. Joseph County FACT.

Tracking a stolen vehicle

Mishawaka police began a second chase around 4:45 a.m. on Aug. 19 that lasted nearly an hour, police reported. It went through the city and into South Bend and unincorporated parts of St. Joseph County. Near the intersection of Indiana 933 and Auten Road, the driver ran over stopsticks, a tactical device used to deflate tires, which ended the pursuit, a news release said. Police reported the suspect was arrested without further incident and is in custody.
