Anchorage Police release more details about shooting that killed Easter Leafa

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Officials with the Anchorage Police Department are releasing more details on the police officer-involved shooting that left a young girl dead at a University District apartment last week.

Easter Leafa, 16, was killed in Tuesday night's shooting, which sparked a new wave of protests and rallies by community members demanding change in the days since there have been six police shootings in Anchorage since May 13.

On Saturday, police released the name of the officer who fired his weapon in the shooting. He is Officer Alexander Roman, who has been on the force for nearly seven years. APD did not release any other names of officers present at the scene, but initially reported that another officer fired a “non-lethal” weapon at Leafa.

Leafa was scheduled to begin her penultimate year at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School.

Police responded to the Greenbriar Apartments on Tudor Road around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night after receiving a call from Leafa's sister who said she had a knife.

According to Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case, when officers arrived at the apartment, they ordered Leafa to drop the knife, but she did not.

Case said an officer – presumably Roman – then shot Leafa multiple times and another officer fired a “less lethal projectile.”
