Who is ASU professor David Zhu? Arizona man charged with murder of his wife

An Arizona State University professor was arrested for murder after allegedly shooting his wife on Saturday.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting near 9300 N. 128th Way around 6:30 p.m., Scottsdale police said Newsweek.

Police officers found a woman with a gunshot wound in the home. She was treated at the scene and then taken to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

An adult male, another adult female, and a male juvenile were in the residence when the shooting occurred. The adult male, later identified as David Zhu, was taken into custody.

Zhu was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on Sunday on a first-degree murder charge. He is being held on $1 million bail.

No other injuries were reported in the shooting. Police said it was an “isolated incident” and there was no danger to the surrounding community.

The wife's name has not yet been released.

“We are unable to provide any further information regarding this tragedy at this time,” Scottsdale police said.

The couple's 19-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son were in the home at the time of the shooting, according to court documents obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. They reportedly told officers that their parents argued “frequently” and were in a “screaming fight” at the time of the shooting.

“None of the children expressed surprise that David had shot their mother,” court documents say.

According to the documents, Zhu allegedly told police he tried to “shoot the wall behind his wife.”

A shotgun and shotgun cartridges were found inside the house.

Arizona State University's website lists Zhu as a professor and dean's distinguished scholar in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship. He has worked at the university since 2009.

According to the website, his work has been published in several scientific journals and received international awards. He received his PhD from the University of Michigan and completed his undergraduate and graduate training at Nankai University in China.

He is scheduled to teach nine courses in the school's fall semester, which begins Thursday.

Newsweek has reached out to Arizona State University for comment.

Arizona State University is a public research university with four main campuses. Zhu teaches at the Tempe campus, which is the largest with over 57,000 students enrolled.
