Rodrigo Bentancur is “conscious and able to communicate” after incident in Leicester game

Ange Postecoglou has announced that Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is “conscious and responsive” after suffering a serious head injury in the 1-1 draw with Leicester.

Bentancur left the field on a stretcher after he went down following a James Maddison corner in the 71st minute of the Premier League match and apparently hit his head on the turf.

Spurs players immediately signaled for help on the sidelines and after seven minutes of treatment, Bentancur was finally able to sit up before being carried off the pitch on a stretcher with oxygen.

Archie Gray came on for Bentancur in the 78th minute due to a concussion and it was another painful visit to the King Power Stadium for the Uruguayan international after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament at the same venue in 2023.

“I don't have much information, but I know he's on his feet and communicating, so from that point of view he's fine. However, it's a head injury and I'll leave that to the medical team now,” Postecoglou reflected.

“The most important thing is that he is definitely conscious and communicating.”

When asked whether Bentancur – who replaced the suspended Yves Bissouma after his laughing gas incident – had lost consciousness, Postecoglou said: “I don’t know.

“Nowadays, when it's a head injury and you see a player go down, we're always cautious at that moment. I don't know the actual circumstances, but I know it was a head collision.”
