Indian doctors demand justice after the tragic murder of a colleague

NEW DELHI — A tragedy has sparked outrage across India. Hundreds of doctors protested near the Health Ministry on Monday, demanding stricter laws to protect health workers. The demonstration follows the gruesome rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The doctors held placards with slogans such as “Justice delayed is justice denied” and were prevented by police from offering free outpatient services outside the ministry. Doctors and other health workers across the country have temporarily suspended non-emergency medical care to raise awareness about the vulnerability of medical personnel.

The attack on the young doctor has highlighted the significant safety concerns faced by doctors and medical staff working long shifts. Many doctors echoed similar sentiments, saying it was not just about one victim but about the widespread insecurity felt by all those working in the healthcare sector.

“If a woman is not safe in her workplace, in a hospital, I wonder which woman is safe?” protested Daisy Singh. The protest, which included nurses, medical students and senior doctors, was part of larger demands for reforms and improved safety measures.

Since the tragic incident, vigils and candlelight rallies have been held, especially by vulnerable communities, to denounce the ongoing violence against women. The Indian Medical Association has demanded that assaults on health workers on duty be treated as non-bailable criminal offenses.

The fear is not unfounded; India is struggling with a high number of cases of violence against women. Data from the National Crime Records Bureau shows alarming statistics: In 2022 alone, 31,516 rapes were reported, an increase of 20% over previous years.

Following the murder, the suspect – a volunteer police officer – was arrested, but the victim's family claims that multiple attackers may have been involved. Authorities have pledged that the investigation will be overseen by the federal government, indicating the sensitivity of the case.

Thousands of citizens, especially women, continue to raise their voices on the streets demanding justice for the murdered doctor. Many believe that this case is linked to other notable brutalities, such as the infamous Delhi gang rape of 2012, which led to stricter laws but failed to eradicate violence against women.

Changes to the law have not always been successful either. Even after the introduction of harsher penalties and faster trials, sexual violence remains widespread. The government has changed the laws and introduced the death penalty for repeat offenders. However, the effectiveness of these punishments continues to be questioned.

The protests have sparked solidarity across sectors, with participants ranging from ordinary citizens to legal experts joining hands. Most notably, rival fan bases of Kolkata's sports teams came together peacefully to support the call for justice, demonstrating unity despite societal divisions.

Doctors also called for the implementation of the Central Protection Act, which aims to improve the safety of healthcare workers. By providing patient care, these healthcare workers are not only demonstrating their dedication to their profession, but also their commitment to changing societal norms regarding safety and justice.

Victims' families have expressed fear and anger and accused authorities of negligence, saying the ongoing violence against women is dashing their hopes for a safer environment inside and outside hospitals.

Legal experts, many of whom joined the protests, pointed to the inadequacies of India's current legal framework and joined in calls for immediate reforms. These developments represent another chapter in the growing unrest surrounding the protection of rights against sexual violence.

The healthcare community remains fully engaged and firmly at the forefront of seeking justice after the loss of a loved one. Each rally amplifies the demand for systemic change and carries its call to action far beyond hospital walls.
