Man charged with attempted murder after shooting at Kroger in Richland County

Late Monday afternoon, a judge set bail at $50,000 for Lateef Carnegie, 50, accused of shooting someone in the middle of the Kroger parking lot on Roberts Branch Parkway.

Currently, the suspected shooter is still being held in the Richland County Jail, but what happened on Sunday has people on edge. Authorities said officers were called to the Kroger on Roberts Branch Parkway around 2:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found employees detaining the suspect, now identified as Lateef Carnegie, 50, after he fired a handgun he had hidden on his person.

While Carnegie was being arrested, a witness told officers he disarmed Carnegie and put the gun in his pocket, according to the incident report. According to the incident report, witnesses told officers that after a verbal altercation, Carnegie became angry, pulled out a black handgun and started shooting in the parking lot.

According to the accident report, officers found a bullet hole in the front windshield and the smaller driver's window of a car. The gun was taken for examination and Carnegie was taken to jail without further incident. Carnegie is charged with attempted murder, breach of the peace and use of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

People who live and work in the area said crimes like this are not common in the area. “I would say it's weird over here,” said Michael Phillips, who lives nearby. “I mean, shootings are common, but it's pretty quiet on this side.”

If Carnegie makes the bail, he would have to wear an ankle monitor, surrender any weapons he owns, and have no contact with the victim.
