Hunter Greene, Brent Suter, Matt McLain

TORONTO – Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Brent Suter grabbed his hat and glove and stormed out of the visitors' clubhouse at Rogers Centre just hours before Monday's series opener against the Blue Jays.

“Time for an international bullpen,” said Suter, who then led a live bullpen session that went so well that his next step after returning from the injured list is minor league rehab, which he could begin at the end of the week.

It's just the latest sign of a quick recovery from a partial tear of the teres major muscle in the latissimus dorsi near his throwing shoulder. He's been on the injured list for less than a month.

“The international pen was solid. Not incredible, but solid,” said Suter. “It felt really good.”

This could enable Suter's return sometime around September 1st.

Further injury updates:

  • Ace Hunter Greene (elbow soreness) was in Los Angeles on Monday for a second opinion. The Reds remain optimistic he could return on or around his eligible return date of Aug. 29. “It's optimistic. Very optimistic,” manager David Bell said.
  • Right-hander Graham Ashcraft (elbow strain) was examined by medical staff on Monday to begin a throwing program.
  • Infielder Matt McLain, who has not played this season because of a shoulder injury and a recent setback with his rib cage, had another exam on his ribs on Monday. He and the club remain hopeful he can return to the team before the end of the season.
