Kolkata rape and murder: Former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh lands in trouble as CBI collects his calls and chat records

The CBI officials investigating the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata have decided to collect the call records and chat details of former principal Sandip Ghosh. The former principal has been questioned by the investigating agency for the past four days.

A CBI official told PTI that some of Ghosh's answers did not match those of other people being questioned in the case. The CBI has prepared a list of 40 people, including doctors and security personnel, to be questioned in connection with the case.

Ghosh was also asked to explain what he did after learning about the victim's murder. He was also asked to explain why he made the parents wait for nearly three hours before showing them their daughter's body. The former headmaster was also asked which people he called after getting the news of the death.

The former rector was also questioned about who had ordered the renovation of the rooms adjacent to the seminar room after the body of the postgraduate intern was found there on August 9.

Ghosh is also in trouble for revealing the victim's name. Kolkata Police has filed a complaint against him in this connection. According to police sources, Ghosh came to know about the incident from a doctor at the hospital at around 10:15 am on August 9. More than five hours later, at around 3 pm, he filed a complaint and revealed the victim's name publicly.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government on Monday formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital since 2021. The investigation team is headed by State Inspector General of Police Pranab Kumar. The team has been asked to submit an initial report on the progress of the investigation within a month.

A circular from the Internal Security Department of the Home and Hill Ministry said the SIT had “access to all relevant documents of government departments and private agencies required for the expeditious completion of the investigation”.

Ghosh, an orthopedic doctor, had resigned from his post as principal of RG Kar Medical College two days after the woman's body was found on August 9. He returned to another hospital a day later, but was severely reprimanded by the Calcutta High Court and placed on long leave.

Ghosh also filed a petition in the Supreme Court expressing apprehension that his life was in danger. The court directed him to approach a single judge bench.
