Kamala Harris calls on Americans to “fight for ideals” at the start of the Democratic Convention in Chicago.

The four-day Democratic Party convention began in Chicago on Monday, with a surprise appearance by the party's presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. President Joe Biden, who has ended his re-election campaign, also attended the convention and received a standing ovation when he took the stage.

In her first words, Harris thanked the enthusiastic crowd and thanked President Joe Biden. “I want to kick things off by celebrating our incredible President Joe Biden,” Harris said. “Thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifelong commitment to our nation, and for all that you will continue to do. We are eternally grateful to you,” Harris said. She also urged the audience to “fight for ideals that are dear to us.”

At the party convention, which is attended by over 4,000 delegates, Harris is recognized as the Democratic candidate and the party platform is approved. The party convention lasts until Thursday.

President Biden, introduced by his daughter Ashley, began his speech by thanking First Lady Jill Biden. He recalled his inauguration four years ago and said he swore “to you and to God to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States.”

“Before me lay a city surrounded by the National Guard. Behind me, a Capitol building had been overrun by a violent mob just two weeks earlier. What I knew then, deep in my heart, I know now: There is no place for political violence in America. None. You can't just say you love your country when you win,” Biden said, adding that democracy had triumphed. “Democracy delivered. And now democracy must be preserved,” Biden said.

The First Lady had previously praised the President for his decision not to run for re-election and to support Kamal Harris. “With faith and conviction, Joe knows that the strength of our nation comes not from intimidation or cruelty, but from the small acts of kindness that heal deep wounds, from serving the communities that make us who we are, from loving a country that shines with promise and renewal. Kamala Harris knows that too,” said the First Lady.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also gave a rousing speech in which she thanked the crowd for chanting anti-Trump slogans such as “Lock him up!”

She added that the future is here. “I wish my mother and Kamala's mother could see it,”

Regarding a female presidential candidate, Clinton added: “The story of my life and the story of our country is that progress is possible.
