Truck crash on Massachusetts Pike in Charlton leaves three injured, police say – NBC Boston

Three people, including children, were seriously injured in a series of accidents in Charlton on Monday afternoon that closed the Massachusetts Turnpike in both directions, Massachusetts State Police said.

Pictures from the scene showed several trucks involved in accidents.

In the first case, a truck carrying a forklift hit the guardrail, setting off a chain reaction as a pickup truck carrying a Jeep swerved to avoid the first truck, according to Massachusetts State Police. The Jeep flew onto the roadway, causing a semi-truck to swerve. The semi-truck then hit a box truck. No one was injured in the first accident.

However, as traffic began to slow down to avoid the first crash, according to state police, a bobtail tractor struck a passenger car, sending it flying into the back of another semi. The driver of the car suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to a local hospital. Two children who were riding in the car were also seriously injured and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

MassDOT posted on X, formerly Twitter, around 3 p.m. that eastbound Interstate 90 was closed at Exit 85 due to “multiple accidents.” About 15 minutes later, they issued an update saying the highway was now closed in both directions.

The westbound side of the highway reopened around 3:40 p.m., but all eastbound traffic was still diverted to Exit 78, according to MassDOT. Interstate 84 was also closed at I-90 and was diverted to Route 20.

The images showed a semi-truck that appeared to have flipped over at one crash scene, with at least one damaged vehicle nearby. At another crash scene, a Jeep was on its roof, next to a box truck and a semi-truck on the side of the road.
