Paddleboarders in distress have rescue boats launched in Falmouth

On Monday 19 August 2024, Falmouth Lifeboat Station received an urgent call for assistance after two paddleboarders got into serious difficulty in the Carrick Roads. The incident occurred shortly after 1pm when a distress call was made alerting the Coastguard to the paddleboarders' plight.

Realising the seriousness of the situation, Falmouth Coastguard immediately called the volunteer crew of the Falmouth Lifeboat. At exactly 13:23 the crew were requested to dispatch their inshore lifeboat, the Atlantic 85 Robina Nixon Chard, to the scene. The lifeboat was launched just seven minutes later, at 13:30. The crew were determined to reach the paddleboarders as quickly as possible.

Paddleboarders achieve safety

Despite difficult conditions, including force 5/6 southerly winds, the paddleboarders reached shore safely as the rescue boat arrived on scene. The rescue boat crew, who arrived within 15 minutes of launching, confirmed that both people were safe and no longer required assistance.

After satisfying themselves that the situation was under control, the Coast Guard decommissioned the lifeboat. The Robina Nixon Chard then made its way back to station, returning at 14:07.

RNLI safety advice

The incident is a stark reminder of the importance of good preparation when engaging in water sports. The RNLI advises anyone venturing out on the water to always check weather conditions, wear a buoyancy aid or lifejacket, inform someone of your plans and carry a means of communication.
