Suspect taken into custody after shooting at police officer in Wisconsin Rapids

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAW) – A suspect is in custody after shooting at police officers in Wisconsin Rapids.

Wisconsin Rapids police said they were investigating a domestic dispute Tuesday morning when a suspect fled in a vehicle. A Portage County Sheriff's Office officer found the suspect a short time later and attempted to stop him, but he fled in the vehicle again.

The suspect's vehicle was disabled in the area of ​​8th Street and East Grand Avenue in Wisconsin Rapids. The suspect continued to fire at officers and fled the scene. A short time later, the suspect was located by a drone on a building roof in the area of ​​9th and Grape Street. The suspect continued to fire at officers until officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was arrested and transported to a local hospital. There is no further threat to the public and the investigation is ongoing.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted with the incident, including the Portage and Wood County Sheriff's Offices, as well as the Grand Rapids, Nekoosa, Stevens Point and Marshfield police departments.

The investigation is being carried out by the Department of Criminal Investigation.
