Like every other state, Illinois has a problem with violent crime, and the numbers are always highest in the areas surrounding the largest cities. What surprised me was that the city of Chicago gets so much attention for its violence. I never thought we wouldn't have the highest rate of all four states around us.

Illinois has a violent crime rate of 287 (violent crimes per 100,000 people), which is below the national average.
