USMNT player Tim Weah out with thigh injury

Tim Weah could miss the first games of the Mauricio Pochettino era.

Weah, the veteran U.S. national team striker, injured his thigh in the first half of Italian club Juventus' 3-0 win over Como in Turin on Monday. The 24-year-old Brooklyn native scored his first Serie A goal just moments before being substituted at halftime.

On Tuesday, the Italian record champion, who has won the title 36 times, announced in a statement that Weah “suffered a minor thigh injury to his right thigh and will be re-evaluated in approximately 10 days.”

That schedule would put Weah through Aug. 30, just two days before Juventus hosts Roma at Allianz Stadium. The USMNT players named to the squad that will face Canada and New Zealand in friendlies early next month will begin arriving in Kansas City on Sept. 1. The Americans will face the Canadians there six days later, then travel to Cincinnati to face the Kiwis on Sept. 10.

Former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain coach Pochettino is expected to be officially introduced as the new USMNT coach by then, although he is unlikely to be on the sidelines for those games.

Weah, the son of former Ballon d'Or winner George Weah, has won 41 caps for the United States since his debut in 2018. His six international goals include the Americans' first at the 2022 World Cup.

Weah joined Juventus last season after four years at French club Lille. Before that, he played for PSG and Scottish club Celtic. The winger played 30 games in Serie A last year without scoring a goal, but scored a beautiful goal in Juve's Coppa Italia round of 16 victory over Salernitana to win the title.
