Beyoncé sings a cappella version of “Freedom” in Kamala Harris’ new campaign video

Whoever urged Kamala Harris to choose Beyoncé's “Freedom” as her campaign anthem deserves a raise. The 2016 empowerment record resurfaced in a video shown on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

Unlike the studio version used when Harris first announced her presidential campaign, Monday's (Aug. 19) version saw Beyoncé first sing the record a capella. As she sang over a montage of photos and video clips, a voice narrated: “What kind of America do we want? One where we're divided, angry, depressed? Come on, we're Americans. Fascism? We conquered that. The moon? Landed on it. The future? We're building it. Freedom? Nobody loves it more, and we're fighting for it.”

It continued: “Freedom from control. Freedom from extremism and fear.” Harris chimed in: “Extremists want to take us back, but we are not going back,” while Bey boomed in the background: “I keep running because a winner doesn't quit.”

The video ended with Harris' question, “Do we believe in the promise of America and are we willing to fight for it?”, underscored by her campaign slogan, “When we fight, we win.”

Harris also made a surprise appearance at the DNC last night. Wearing a tan suit, she walked out to “Freedom” smiling and waving.

“I want to start by celebrating our incredible President Joe Biden,” Harris began. “Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifelong commitment to our nation, and for all that you will continue to do. We are forever grateful.”

The Vice President continued, “As I look out at everyone tonight, I see the beauty of our great nation. People from every corner of our country and from every walk of life are united here by our shared vision for the country's future, and this November we will come together and declare with one voice as one people: We move forward with optimism, hope and faith, guided by our love for our country, knowing that we all have so much more in common than what divides us. Let us fight for the ideals we hold dear, and let us always remember: When we fight, we win.”

It seemed appropriate that Harris wore a tan suit, considering the controversy that surrounded President Obama when he appeared in a tan suit during his tenure as president. He and former First Lady Michelle Obama will speak at the DNC tonight, along with Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. NBC News.
