CDOT honors victims of Red Rocks accident

MORRISON, Colorado (KKTV) – On Monday, CDOT held a memorial service for the victims of the 2023 plane crash at the Red Rocks Amphitheater.

In 2023, 257 people were killed in speeding accidents on Colorado's roadways, according to CDOT. For every person killed in a speeding accident, CDOT has reserved a seat in the amphitheater.

Over two rows of Red Rocks were filled with memorial plaques for the victims.

According to CDOT, the impressive exhibit included handwritten notes indicating the gender and age of the victims – some of whom were as young as 11 – as well as the location of the crash.

According to CDOT, in 2023, most tickets were issued to drivers driving over 20 miles per hour on I-70, I-25, Highway 50, Highway 24 and Highway 285.

CDOT has also created a custom Spotify playlist that it says features slow, gentle songs designed to help drivers unwind. Click here to view CDOT's playlist.

“By displaying the 257 fatalities at a beloved state landmark, CDOT hopes to spark a meaningful discussion about traffic safety and encourage drivers to slow down,” said Sam Cole, CDOT communications manager. “This initiative is part of CDOT's broader efforts to reduce speeding incidents and make Colorado's roads safer for everyone.”
