Luis Gil injury update: Yankees starter leaves game due to back injury

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil left Tuesday night’s game against the Cleveland Guardians due to a back injury.

At the start of the fourth inning, Gil allowed a home run by Bryan Rocchio to give him the lead. After a walk, he left the game with the trainer.

According to the Yankees, Gil left the game due to a lower back injury.

Gil's official line for the evening included 3.0 innings pitched, in which he allowed three hits, three earned runs and six walks while also recording three strikeouts on 78 pitches.

Entering Tuesday night, Gil was 12-6 with a 3.25 ERA in 121.2 innings pitched this season. In his last four starts, Gil had a 3.72 ERA.

Gil was one of the best pitchers in the league to begin the season. In his first 14 starts, Gil had a record of 9-1 with a 2.03 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched. In his final nine starts, Gil had a record of 3-5 with a 5.62 ERA in 41.2 innings.

Losing Gil for an extended period of time would be a major blow to a starting lineup that has been extremely unreliable since mid-June.

Clarke Schmidt is expected to return sometime in September as he recovers from a latissimus injury. He is expected to begin rehab sometime this week.

Regardless, the Yankees hope the injury isn't too serious as they need to get back in shape for the playoffs.
