Trial scheduled for man who allegedly tried to kill Judge Kavanaugh

A federal judge has scheduled June 9, 2025, for the start of the trial of a California man accused of attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh more than two years ago.

Following the leaked court ruling on the Dobbs v. Jackson – Women’s Health Organization case that lifted abortion protection, the then 26-year-old Nicholas Roske traveled to Washington DC to kill Kavanaugh and conservative judges, prosecutors claim.

“I’m aiming for three,” Roske wrote online, according to authorities.

The court's leaked ruling prompted protesters to gather outside the homes of conservative judges, whose addresses were also leaked online.

The 26-year-old substitute teacher also reportedly told authorities that the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, influenced his decision to attempt to kill Kavanaugh because he believed Kavanaugh would vote to loosen gun laws. The Supreme Court was about to announce a decision expanding gun rights.

Roske took a taxi to Kavanaugh's home in Chevy Chase, Maryland, carrying a knife, a gun and zip ties, authorities said. He arrived at Kavanaugh's home shortly after 1 a.m.

Two U.S. Marshals, who were part of the judges' 24-hour security service, discovered Roske, but he too had already called 911 and told them that he wanted to commit suicide.

Roske was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a U.S. judge. He has pleaded not guilty. Over the past year and a half, prosecutors and Roske's defense attorney have been negotiating on and off for a plea deal. Last month, prosecutors asked to move the case forward with a trial date.

The trial is expected to last a week, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen Gavin said that “jury selection in this case may take a little longer.”

If convicted, Roske faces a life sentence in prison.
