SHAWNEE, Kansas – The Johnson County Coroner’s Office continues to investigate the cause of death of a 15-year-old student-athlete at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

Ovet Gomez Regalado, 15, tragically died as a result of a medical emergency at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

Friends and classmates remembered him at an event at the school on Saturday.

The Shawnee Police Department and the Shawnee Mission School District are conducting separate investigations into the death.

The district said at least seven coaches and an athletic trainer were present at the conditioning workout. Part of the investigation will determine whether weather played a role in the student's death.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association provides guidelines for offseason conditioning events. They have more specific regulations for training.

Season training began on August 19. Gomez-Regalado collapsed on August 14.

“When something like this happens, you ask questions, and that's what we're going to do,” said David Smith, the district's communications director. “These are our children. We want to make sure we're doing everything possible to protect each and every one of them as best we can.”

The KSHSAA requires all athletes to undergo a medical examination prior to playing.

Police did not provide any updates on their investigation on Tuesday.
