Emergency services respond to suspicious fire

JONESBORO, Arkansas (KAIT) – Emergency crews responded to a suspicious fire in Jonesboro on Monday.

According to a Jonesboro Police incident report, officers responded to a car fire in the 700 block of Burke Avenue around noon on Monday, August 19.

Upon arrival, police spoke with firefighters who said the fire appeared suspicious.

Firefighters told police they had gathered information about the vehicle and the owner of the property.

They said the owner, who also owns an auto repair shop, had been having “problems” with some workers.

The report said workers were checking for a gas leak that morning and found the leak was on the property of the auto repair shop owner.

As the workers began digging, the owner came out and began yelling and cursing at them before getting in his Mustang, speeding toward the workers and knocking over their shovels.

While the owner was away, a car on his property that he was allegedly working on began to smoke.

The owner told police he was working on his vehicle when it caught fire, but firefighters said they thought it was suspicious.

According to the report, the owner returned and began spraying the vehicle with a garden hose.

To secure possible evidence, the police turned off the water, which made the owner even angrier.

According to JPD, the investigation was subsequently turned over to the victim's insurance company.
