NFL fans stunned to learn tragic details of Steve McNair's murder as Tennessee Titans set 'amazing' highlights and resurface MVP and Super Bowl quarterback

Fifteen years after his murder, questions still remain about the shocking death of Steve McNair.

The former NFL MVP led the Tennessee Titans to the 1999 Super Bowl and was involved in one of the closest finishes in a major game in league history.

But McNair died on July 4, 2009, at the age of 36, and the unclear circumstances of his death are now part of a Netflix documentary called “Untold: The Murder of Air McNair.”

“15 years ago, legendary Titan Steve McNair was murdered. It is still unclear who actually killed him,” Netflix posted in an advertisement for the series.

“I have to see this,” tweeted one fan.

“What happened to him,” wrote a second fan.

With the 2024 NFL season starting on September 5 and Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs facing Travis Kelce and the Baltimore Ravens, McNair's name is becoming increasingly prominent on social media.

McNair, a dual-threat quarterback at little-known Alcorn State, finished third in the 1994 Heisman Trophy voting.

During the Heisman voting, he was surrounded by players from major universities such as Penn State, Alabama and Colorado.

McNair was selected No. 3 overall by the Houston Oilers, who later moved to Nashville and played for Tennessee.

After starting only six games in his first two professional seasons, McNair completed 52 percent of his passes in 1997, scoring 2,665 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Two years later, the Titans achieved a 13-3 record. Head coach Jeff Fisher led Eddie George, Frank Wycheck, Jevon Kearse and McNair to within a few yards of a Super Bowl victory.

Kurt Warner and the Los Angeles Rams won a memorable 23-16 victory in Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta.

But McNair was just getting started: He finished third in the NFL MVP voting in 2002 and won the award a year later.

“Miss you Steve,” tweeted one fan. “There is and never will be anyone like you!”

“I grabbed my phone and said, 'Is something true?'” Fisher said in the documentary. “What are you talking about? … 'Steve was murdered.'”

McNair was found in 2009 with numerous gunshot wounds in an apartment next to a woman named Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi, who worked at Dave & Buster's and had spent a lot of time with him.

Police said the deaths were a case of murder and suicide committed by Kazemi.

“We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing,” said Titans owner Bud Adams. “He was one of the greatest players to ever play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans.”

“He played with unconditional heart and leadership and took us to places we never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they grapple with his untimely passing.”

McNair participated in four playoff runs with the Titans and was the first black quarterback to be named NFL MVP.

“There are no more men like him – he was a beast,” tweeted one fan.

McNair played 13 NFL seasons, threw for 31,304 yards and 174 touchdowns and ran for 3,590 yards and 37 TDs.
