Cyclist dies after being hit by Amtrak train in downtown Oconomowoc

Oconomowoc police are investigating an incident in which an Amtrak train fatally struck a bicyclist on the tracks downtown Tuesday afternoon.

According to Oconomowoc Police Chief James Pfister, police received a call about the accident in the 200 block of Silver Lake Street at 1:18 p.m. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the person hit is not currently being disclosed, police said.

Marc Magliari, a spokesman for Amtrak, confirmed that Borealis train 1333 was delayed en route from Chicago to St. Paul “after coming into contact with an individual crossing the tracks without authorization.”

None of the 179 train passengers or the train conductor were injured, he said.

The train was delayed for about three hours before moving again, Magliari confirmed. The incident also delayed train 8/28, which runs from Seattle and Portland to Chicago, for about 90 minutes, he said.

Police closed the railroad crossings at South Silver Lake Street, South Cross Street, South Main Street and South Worthington Street for investigation. They have since been reopened, police said.

Amtrak Police, Canadian Pacific Railroad Police and Western Lakes Fire District assisted Oconomowoc Police with the incident.

Authorities said the circumstances leading to the crash were still being investigated.
