Men allegedly tried to steal copper wire from the lighting in Barstow Park


The damage caused by the attempted theft is estimated at $10,000

Two men were caught red-handed Tuesday attempting to steal copper wiring from light poles in a Barstow park, causing $10,000 in damage, authorities said.

The incident began at about 1:45 p.m. when visitors to Dana Park (850 Barstow Road) reported seeing men attempting to steal copper wires from light poles near the tennis courts, according to Barstow police.

“Barstow Police Officers responded quickly and located two individuals matching the reporting officer's description in the area of ​​the tennis courts,” police said in a written statement. “(They) were positively identified by the reporting officer as the suspects.”

Police said the attempted theft caused damage to a main electrical box estimated to be worth $10,000.

The suspects, both men from Barstow, were investigated on suspicion of vandalism, officials said.

One of the suspects was being held on $30,000 bail, county records show. Booking information for the other suspect was not available Tuesday evening.
