Columbus police continue to investigate the suspected overdose death of a boy who had planned to celebrate his first birthday for 16 days.

According to a search warrant filed in Franklin County Municipal Court, police received a call around 10:35 a.m. on August 15 from someone at an apartment in the 400 block of Candlestick Court on the city's Far West Side. The caller said an 11-month-old boy was not breathing.

When the officers arrived, they found the boy unconscious. A short time later, the paramedics declared him dead.

According to the search warrant affidavit, the boy's death initially appeared to be natural, as he showed no visible signs of trauma. The Franklin County Coroner's Office and police launched an investigation due to the suddenness of the boy's death.

Preliminary autopsy results showed that the boy had fentanyl in his body, the affidavit states.

The boy would have celebrated his first birthday on August 31st.

Columbus police have not released any information about the boy's death or classified it as a homicide.

The boy's name is not being released to the Dispatch at this time because an autopsy report has not yet been completed and no charges have been filed in connection with his death.

As Columbus Police continued their investigation, investigators learned that an overdose of a relative of the boy was reported in the same apartment in April 2023. That relative was revived with naloxone, which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

During a search of the apartment, Columbus police found additional doses of naloxone and an unlabeled pill bottle containing a small number of unidentified pills, according to the arrest warrant.
