Michigan man suffers burns after semi-trailer crash on I-96 in Ionia County

BERLIN TWP. — A man was treated for burns after two tractor-trailers collided on Interstate 96 in Ionia County Wednesday.

The accident occurred on the westbound lanes after one of the truck drivers, a 50-year-old man from Highland Park, fell asleep at the wheel, the Ionia County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The Michigan man's semi-trailer collided with another semi-trailer driven by an Iowa man shortly before 9 a.m., authorities said.

The Michigan driver managed to escape his burning semi-truck by climbing out the driver's side window. He was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Iowa man was uninjured.

The westbound lanes were temporarily closed.

Michigan State Police, LIFE EMS and the Berlin & Orange and Lake Odessa fire departments assisted the sheriff's department on scene.
