Delco man accidentally released from county jail

From Delco to Chesco to Montco to Bucks, what do you think WHYY News should cover about life in the Philadelphia suburbs? Let us know!

On August 9, Delaware County jail officials accidentally released an inmate from the George W. Hill Correctional Facility.

According to a county spokesman, prison staff were unaware of the “inappropriate release” until August 15.

“Efforts are currently underway to return the individual to the facility,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances of this incident and will take corrective actions to prevent this from happening again in the future.”

County officials did not confirm the name of the man who was accidentally released, but the Inquirer identified him as 41-year-old Daniel Rogers. The Darby man had been in the county correctional facility since Aug. 5 after pleading guilty to driving under the influence.

Delaware County Common Pleas Judge Richard M. Cappelli sentenced Rogers to 72 hours to six months in the George W. Hill Correctional Facility.

This is not the first time this has happened. In February 2023, a 21-year-old man was mistakenly released from prison due to a clerical error.
