Penei Sewell's injury update: Lions OT reportedly “good” after scare

Here's the good news you've been hoping for after the Detroit Lions training camp scare on Wednesday. Lions All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell is reportedly “fine,” according to a team source told reporter Justin Rogers, after suffering an injury during practice. Sewell cautiously left the field for Wednesday's scrimmage, with the team officially reporting a foot injury.

It's not entirely clear what “good” means exactly, but at least he appears to have avoided a long-term injury. Whether that means he'll be ready for Week 1 — which is still two and a half weeks away — remains to be seen. With the Lions not expected to be available to the media until after their preseason game against the Steelers on Saturday, no official team update is expected until then.

Of course, it would be tough for the Lions to lose Sewell for any length of time. Not only is he arguably the best offensive tackle in football and an undeniable All Pro, but Detroit's offensive tackle depth is concerning at best. Primary backup Dan Skipper is dealing with an ankle injury of his own (though he's expected to return to practice next week), and second-year tackle Colby Sorsdal has had an up-and-down training camp after moving back to the outside this offseason.

Thankfully, Detroit doesn't seem to have to worry too much about that depth right now. Sewell's health would be a huge win for the Lions – and could keep Sewell's Iron Man streak (he hasn't missed a single snap in the last two seasons) alive.

Let's hope for further clarification and continued good news about Sewell and running back Craig Reynolds, who also suffered a lower-body injury on Wednesday.
