Hueneme graduate Carrillo fights on the Chumash card

When opportunity knocked on the door, Angel Carrillo answered.

Carrillo, a 2023 Hueneme High School graduate, will face Josaphat Navarro on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez. The four-round bout will take place ahead of the Hollywood Fight Night card, which will stream live on UFC Fight Pass at 7 p.m.

The 19-year-old Carrillo (2-0-1, 1 KO) was originally scheduled to fight on February 23, also in Chumash, but was forced to withdraw due to a groin injury sustained during training camp.

Tom Loeffler began promoting fight cards at Chumash in July 2023. The longtime promoter agreed with the casino to promote four fight cards per year.

Because of the high level of talent – regardless of whether they were born in Oxnard and Ventura County or moved there – Loeffler made it a priority to give Chumash fighters the opportunity to showcase their talent.

“Our team is committed to having fighters like Angel and others on our fight cards on a regular basis,” Loeffler said. “Oxnard has a great boxing history and fighters from the Oxnard area are the cream of the crop. We are committed to giving these fighters a chance. Fight fans in the area have something to look forward to and should buy their tickets as soon as possible.”

The last Hollywood Fight Night card in June was sold out.

Carrillo, who lives in Oxnard, last fought on July 20, winning by majority decision against Carlos Carrillo Ortiz in Patzcuaro, Mexico.

In his previous fight on December 2, 2023, which took place at the Performing Arts Center in Oxnard, Carrillo overcame a knockdown and knocked out Emmanuel Saenz in the second round

Carrillo is co-trained by Marco Contreras and Gilbert Perez.

Navarro (1-1-1) is originally from the Philippines and now lives in Laguna Hills. In his last fight on July 13 in Modesto, the 33-year-old Navarro lost a unanimous decision to Nicholas Saavedra.

Another Oxnard fighter will also be on the card. Daniel Robles will face Ivan Zarate in a six-round featherweight bout.

Robles (8-3-1, 5 KOs) has not fought since his unanimous decision victory over Joshua Draughter on January 13, 2023. The victory over Draughter ended a three-fight losing streak.

The 32-year-old is coached by longtime Ventura coach Joseph “Hoss” Janik and managed by Chris Jay of Army of Freshmen.

Zarate (4-2, 1 KO), who lives in San Pedro, defeated Raul Matias by unanimous decision in his last fight on March 23.

In the main event, undefeated junior welterweight Cain Sandoval (13-0, 11 KOs) from Sacramento will face Romero Duno (26-4, 20 KOs) from the Philippines in a 10-round fight.

Hernandez returns to the game

Former amateur star Fidencio Hernandez will face Diego Dominguez on Saturday night at the Event Center in Adelanto.

The four-round junior lightweight bout will be the highlight of an Evolution 17 card.

Hernandez (1-0, KO) was born in Oxnard and currently resides in Ventura. He made his professional debut in December 2020 in San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico, winning by knockout over Jose Loreto Salcedo. Hernandez is managed by Marcus Smith.

Dominguez (2-0, 1 KO), who lives in Fontana, knocked out Fernando Duran in the first round of his last fight on March 23
