The number of drug overdoses increases from year to year

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were more than 107,000 drug overdose-related deaths in the United States in 2023, and more than 75% of them were related to opioids.

Since 2013, the United States has experienced what the CDC calls a “third wave” of deaths from opioid overdoses. With this wave, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl came onto the market.

Fentanyl is incredibly dangerous, even in small amounts. Heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine can be mixed with fentanyl, which is similar to other prescription opioids. Many people may not be aware they are taking fentanyl.

Russel Morgan, founder of Morgan Legal Group, says even if drug users survive an overdose, they still face legal consequences.

“Possession of these types of drugs can result in serious criminal consequences,” Morgan said. “If we look at some of the recent cases, depending on the amount you have on you, you can serve a sentence of two to four years in prison, if not more.” The number of drug overdoses is increasing every year.
