World-famous gay penguin Sphen dies at SEA LIFE aquarium in Sydney, leaving behind his same-sex partner and adopted chicks

A gentoo penguin whose world-famous same-sex mating changed the New South Wales curriculum and inspired the Mardi Gras community has sadly passed away at Sydney's Sea Life Aquarium.

Sphen and his same-sex penguin partner Magic rose to fame in 2018 when news of their relationship made headlines around the world.

The lovebirds celebrated their sixth birthday together and successfully raised two adorable adopted chicks named Sphengic (Lara) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020.

Sphen and Magic's love story has been included in the New South Wales state curriculum, featured in the Netflix series “Atypical,” and featured in numerous books and documentaries. The boys have also been the inspiration for a carnival float.

Sea Life Sydney Aquarium chief executive Richard Dilly said Sphen's death at the age of 12 – a long life for a penguin – had shocked all the communities affected by it.

“The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking for the penguin colony, the team and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by the story of Sphen and Magic,” Mr Dilly said.

“We want to take this opportunity to reflect on and celebrate Sphen's life. We want to remember what an icon he was, what a unique connection he had with Magic, and what a positive impact he had on the world.

“Sphen and Magic’s love story has captivated the world and it was an honor to welcome local and international fans, some of whom traveled long distances to see it in real life.

“The team’s focus now is on Magic, who will soon be preparing for his first breeding season without Sphene.”

The team took Magic, who turns nine in November, to Sphen to help him understand that his partner would not be returning and to help him cope with the loss.

He immediately began to sing and the melody was echoed by the penguin colony.

During their relationship, Sphen and Magic were found together outside of the breeding season, which is considered unique for gentoo penguins.

They enabled their aquarium to spread messages about conservation, plastic pollution, global warming and protecting wild penguins through fundraising initiatives.

Fans of the couple took to Sea Life's website to pay tribute to one half of the legendary duo and remember his life and role in supporting the initiatives.

“I am so sorry that Sphen passed away. He touched so many people's hearts, including mine,” one person wrote.

“I have followed his journey with Magic from the beginning. Sphen and Magic's story really highlights the importance of conservation.

“Sphen, we will miss you very much.”

Another person took the time to express their condolences, saying, “Sphen and Magic were equally iconic.”

“My heart breaks for the keepers and the entire team at Sea Life Sydney.”

It is assumed that Sphen died of natural causes.
