Bruno Fernandes confirms injury after Manchester United scare

Bruno Fernandes admits his “lungs were at the end of their rope” during the epic FA Cup clash between Manchester United and Liverpool on Sunday.

Amad Diallo scored the last-minute winner at Old Trafford to send United into the semi-finals at Wembley, where they will face Championship side Coventry.

Towards the end of the game, Fernandes was limping and in the chaos of extra time he even had to play in central defence.

United were without Casemiro and Jonny Evans due to injuries before the game and are already without players such as Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial.

However, speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, the United captain stressed that he was simply “tired”.

“I was screaming and I couldn't hear my voice. So you can imagine how loud the noise was on the field, how tired we were, how everything else.

“My lungs were also exhausted… but it was impressive. I think they were excellent to us from start to finish, even when we conceded a goal, because the next moment we created something and the stadium stood up again and created the momentum we needed.”

Speaking about his move to defence, the Portuguese international said: “At one point I had to jump into the middle, at others I had to drop back a bit because my legs were getting tired, I had cramps all over and I even had to take a hit to help.

“But it's all that's needed to help the team. Because Antony ended up at left-back, Eriksen was also at number 6, McTominay further forward. We all gave everything to win the game.”

After the international break, United travel to Brentford in the Premier League before hosting Chelsea and Liverpool next month as they look to catch Aston Villa and Tottenham in fourth and fifth place respectively.
