Family sells famous Scottish hotel after 164 years

Described as a hotel full of historic charm and character, The George Hotel in Inveraray features 24 individually designed bedrooms, a lounge and cocktail bar, a public bar, as well as a restaurant and conservatory.

The property features a large, multi-functional garden bar with outdoor seating, an “exceptional location with panoramic views of Loch Fyne”, a converted four-bedroom cottage and separate staff accommodation blocks.

Graeme Smith of Smith and Clough Business Associates, who is handling the sale alongside Brian Sheldon at Christie & Co, said: “It is an absolute delight to be bringing The George Hotel Inveraray to the market for the first time in its long history.”

“It is considered one of the most beautiful and prestigious hotels in Scotland with a worldwide reputation. It has been owned and carefully managed by the Clark family since 1860.

Mr Sheldon of Christie & Co said: “We are delighted to be working with Smith and Clough on this world-class commission. The George Hotel is an established family business in the royal town of Inveraray, the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, which is up for sale for the first time since 1860.”

The agents said offers of around £3.9 million were sought.
