Accident leaves two dead, others seriously injured, several children – First update from the state

Police are currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred late Wednesday evening at the intersection of Route 273 and Airport Road in New Castle.

Two people were killed and several others were seriously injured in the collision, which involved a dark sedan and a minivan.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene shortly before 11:20 p.m. to find a chaotic situation. Upon arrival, they discovered two people trapped in the rubble and several other seriously injured people, including children. Due to the number of patients and the severity of their injuries, a Level 1 mass casualty incident was declared upon arrival.

Images from the scene of the accident show dozens of first responders busy treating injured patients in the middle of the road, while debris from the accident lies scattered everywhere.

According to a witness, the dark sedan missed a red light and collided with the minivan, causing it to roll over several times. A child was apparently thrown from the vehicle during the rollover.

A woman and a child, both passengers in the minivan, were pronounced dead at the scene. Up to five other people, including the occupants of both vehicles, were taken to Christiana Hospital and AI Dupont Hospital with serious injuries.

While rescue efforts were underway, there were reports of an accident in which a man was seriously injured, reportedly while fleeing from police. The man reportedly suffered severe leg trauma. The witness at the scene of the minivan crash reported to FSU that the driver of the dark sedan could be heard yelling “My legs” as rescue workers attempted to help him.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the fatal crash was related to a chase. More details will be released as they become available.

This is an evolving story.
