15-year-old arrested after fatal shooting over headphones in Sanford

SANFORD, Florida. — Sanford police said a 15-year-old was arrested Wednesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man in July. The man was killed while trying to sell a pair of headphones.

Dra'shawn Williams was already in custody when an arrest warrant was issued in connection with the fatal shooting of Brandon Leo on July 20. The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. near a home on West 3rd Street near Pomegranate Avenue.

According to police, Leo drove up to the house to sell a pair of headphones and then waited in his pickup truck in the driveway.

Police said at least two people approached the driver's side of the pickup truck, at which point Leo put the truck in reverse and backed out of the driveway. Several shots were fired and the pickup crashed into a retention pond, where it was found by Sanford officers who were called to the scene after the shooting, officials said.

Leo was found dead in the partially submerged pickup truck, apparently with a gunshot wound, police said.

“A family is grieving the loss of their son because of a pair of headphones,” Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith said in a statement in July. “The word senseless does not begin to describe this tragedy. Our investigators have worked tirelessly to locate these two individuals who clearly have no regard for the value of human life.”

Dauntaye Alderman, who lives in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, told News 6 what he heard that night.

“I was just standing there having fun and then all of a sudden I heard a gunshot and then dozens more,” Alderman said.

Williams is charged with first-degree murder.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Sanford Police or Crimeline at 800 423-TIPS (8477).
